The eating and exercise enigma

I talked to a friend today, and we got to comparing our weight maintenance/release issues. We’re opposites.

She has no problem getting up and outside the house to be active or go to the gym. She walks the dog, goes hiking, rock climbing. On the other hand, there are some days I have to think hard if I even made it out of the house yet. The latest thing I did for exercise was yesterday when I did 100 jumping jacks after a call. And earlier that morning, I went for a half-hour easy hike with my husband after dropping off the kids at school.

But I’m not consistent with moving, and I’d like to move more on a daily basis to continue my good health.

My eating habit may be my one saving grace. I don’t tend to eat a lot. I immediately feel gross and uncomfortable when I’ve indulged a little too much. It doesn’t work as well against chocolate and cookies. However, it’s still an advantage to have some natural protection against overeating.

My friend doesn’t have a similar defense mechanism in place. She can indulge in any food and not feel physically sick about it after. One of her tactics is to not buy any junk food or ice cream at all to tempt her while she’s working from home!

We laugh about our dissimilarities. We try to offer each other some advice, but we’re just wired so differently. I guess we just need to work it out our own way, try to understand ourselves better, and figure out how to short-circuit our penchant for self-sabotage.
