Identity before discipline.

Some Toby guy asked Cal Newport: “How do I improve my discipline? I have a problem sticking to my long-term plans.”

Mr. Newport addressed this question on his YouTube channel after pausing for a bit. “I think of discipline as more of an identity that you develop, then I do an approach to a particular challenge.”

I found this enlightening.

Of course! This makes total sense. I’m the kind of person that brushes their teeth every night. I’m the kind of person that’s on time. I’m the kind of person that doesn’t waste the day by sleeping in.

I guess I’ll come up with a few more identities for myself to help set up new habits and routines!
